In the old days, villagers collected alms, before gathering at church for the Blessing of the Plough. Today, Plough Sunday is still seen as a way of celebrating farming and the work of farmers. Plough Monday was the day for the farmers to return to work – although no work was done on this day. Dressed in clean white smocks, they dragged a plough through the village and collected money for the “plow light” that was kept burning in the church all year. Designer, Nicola Slaney, discovered an usual plant, commonly called ploughmans spikenard, and an idea formed in her mind. Sloping, verdant fields are framed by the yellow ploughman’s spikenard flowers.
